Part I

 

1. Meets Rainey and hires him

2. Hires 3 more men

3. Crosses terrain, then the third man sells out Rainey and Trigger to Kiowa so they can get their dying chief back. Rainey's mother was Pawnee.

4. Herd stampedes, killing a Farmer McGregor's son. Pete and Rainey save the other 2 boys who were in the path, but that doesn’t make the farmer any easier on Gil, demanding his hanging instead of the compensation Gil offered. Trigger takes the herd on while Rainey and Pete stay behind to convince the farmer to relent. Eventually, he accepts a compromise that Pete and Rainey keep secret from Gil, except the mother of the boy gloats as she boards the stagecoach.

5. Trigger, Quince, and Coss encounter nuns traveling to a new missionary. Trig becomes romantically involved with one, and another takes Rainey under her wing.

6. There’s a rough river crossing that leaves half the men wounded as they pull into the cowtown to sell the herd.

7. Rainey Interlude

 

Part II

 

8. Rainey returns during the round up and branding of the next drive.

9. Rainey rescues the children of a dead woman, trapped by wolves in a crumbling house.

10. Crosses paths with a traveling circus. Rainey gets in a fight over the elephant. Finds new home for elephant among a mining tribe of Indians

11. Rainey encounters a dying army man while searching for berries, agrees to defend fort while Gil rounds up the deserters. Rainey gets shot in the leg.

12. While getting bullet extracted, Rainey rescues Boots, brings him back to the herd and convinces Gil to hire him.

13. Gil is jealous. He reacts by flirting up the women in each town. One of them hits all Gil’s weak spots, and almost convinces him to marry her, except she also makes a play for Trigger. When Gil and Trig fight over her, Rainey tries to break them up, and gets stabbed by the woman. That stops the fight, and both Trig and Gil escort the woman to a new town and pay her off.

14. Rainey Interlude

 

Part III

 

15. Rainey is accused of robbing a bank, delaying his return to the new drive. Gil hears about it and rescues him

16. Seeking a pass through the mountains, they encounter a silver mine worked by Indians. They want to stop the herd and kill everyone to keep the secret of the mine. Rainey, healing their sick donkeys, gains their trust interpreting for Gil, and they agree to let herd through.

17. Deranged ex-confederate soldier claims to be new emperor and recruits drovers with promises of gold. With no cowboys, Gil is forced to sell herd. Rainey learns new trail boss is in the pay of mad emperor, and outflanks him. One drover is killed in the shoot out, and the emperor commits suicide. Gil gets his herd back.

18. Sticky fingered granny joins herd to get to next town. This causes the men to get edgy, and Gil is constantly breaking up fights. He gets shot, and Rainey cares for him.

19. Gil gets telegram that cattle prices are falling rapidly and they have to push hard to get to market before they lose everything, so he takes a poor shortcut across a dry plain.

20. Gil gets new telegram saying the last one was wrong, and is joined by a brother-in-law and his daughters over a problem in his shipping line. Gil fobs the girls off on Trigger and Rainey. They adore Rainey and follow him everywhere. When the cattle arrive in Dodge, Gil sells the herd at a profit and takes his daughters back to Boston.

21. Rainey Interlude

 

Part IV

 

22. Rainey arrives late to herd with a wagonload of mail order brides who are lost. Gil reluctantly allows them to travel along. Problems arise among the men. One bride takes matters in hand, shoots a drover, and parts ways when they meet with a merchant train.

23. Farmer Higgins refuses to let thirsty herd drink from pond. Rainey offers to dig well. Some of the other drovers join in to help, some laze about. Fights break out.

24. Pete is framed for a murder, while Gil tries to free him, Rainey is accused of fathering a cantankerous old woman’s grandchild. The real father of the child is the murderer.

25. Mulkey’s Crossing - an argument with a merchant fur trapper's train about crossing rights at the only available river crossing. Rainey shoots one of Mulkey's men for stealing a calf and shooting his dog. Mulkey's gun-for-hire aims to shoot Gil and gets Rainey instead.

26. After Rainey's partly healed and back with the herd, a phantom Stalker terrorizes the drovers. A dead man is found when Boots goes after a stray. Gil deduces an ambush and plans a counter ambush.

27. There's a plant among Gil's men, and he poisons the crew. Doughboy knows the antidote, and doses up the men, but they are still sick when the attack happens. Gil's men win, round up the herd, bury the dead, and finish up the drive.

St. Louis.

Cattle sold, pay and bonuses dispersed, Gil and Rainey buy a ranch, name it the Biscoes Downes Cattle Ranch.
